Christopher Tye

Christopher Tye (around 1505 , † around 1572 ) was an English organist and composer of the Renaissance .

Life

Tye studied at Cambridge University and received his doctorate in music there and in Oxford . From around 1543 he was Master of the Choristers at Ely Cathedral and held this position until 1561. Among other things, he was the musical teacher of King Edward VI. and worked with the Chapel Royal in London .

Christopher Tye wrote numerous Latin fairs and Psalm compositions as well as English-language works for the service use of the Church of England . He has also written works for instrumental ensembles, including the twenty-one works in the In Nomine collection .
