The Christ Church St. Konrad is a church building of the Old Catholic Church in the old town of Konstanz on Lake Constance, between the Konstanz Minster and the City Theater , on the Konzilstrasse.

history

The Christ Church of St. Konrad was built as a Jesuit church between 1604 and 1607 in the late Renaissance style. A college and a grammar school were built around the church. The church was given the patronage of St. Konrad , Bishop of Konstanz in the years 934–975.

The church is based on Roman models as a wall pillar church with a retracted choir and initially had a flat ceiling. In 1682 the church was rebuilt by the Jesuit Heinrich Mayer and received a stucco-decorated barrel vault in the Baroque style . In 1929–1930 the endangered vault was replaced by a false vault that hangs in the roof structure by means of a steel suspension.

In 1773 the Jesuit order was abolished. The grammar school was privatized, the church itself served as a grammar school church for school services. In 1904 the church was given to the old Catholic parish of Konstanz for use, the grammar school moved into a new building in the Petershausen district on the right bank of the Rhine in 19010/1911 (see Heinrich-Suso-Gymnasium Konstanz ). Since 1962 the church has been owned by the state of Baden-Württemberg, which is also responsible for the maintenance of the building.

From 2008 the outside of the building was renovated, and a comprehensive interior renovation was carried out in the years until 2014.

Furnishing

The church received its first fittings by 1610. What are preserved are u. a. a statue of Mary with child, which was created by the Dutch master Hans Morinck. There are also 15 rosary pictures on the pillars of the nave. They come from an unknown artist, are painted on wood and bear the coat of arms of the respective donor.

In the choir there are four paintings with portraits of the Jesuit saints ( Aloisius von Gonzaga , Ignatius von Loyola , Stanislaus Kostka and the Japanese martyrs ). The paintings probably date from around 1683.

The current furnishings in the Rococo style probably date from the years 1761–1763. All the altars were rebuilt, with the side choir altars removed. In addition, today's pulpit, confessionals and pews date from this period.
