The Chrobry oak [ 'xrɔbrɨ -] (from Polish Dąb Chrobry ), named after the nickname Chrobry (German: "brave, combative, courageous") of the prince and first Polish king Bolesław the brave , is one of the oldest pedunculate oaks in Poland .

It grows in the area of the former Sprottau city forest , now part of the Buczyna Szprotawska nature reserve in the Lower Silesian Heath (Bory Dolnośląskie in Polish) and marks the boundary of Szprotawa (Sprottau) and its eastern neighbor Piotrowice (Petersdorf).

It has been recognized as a natural monument since March 24, 1967. Even before the Second World War , it was protected in what was then Lower Silesia, Germany. Its age is estimated to be around 765 years, and it germinated around the year 1250.

The Chrobry has a strongly developed crown and thick branches that turn into branches with lush foliage. The trunk and some branches are hollow.

The span of the crown is about 16 m, the height 28 m, the trunk circumference 9.92 m and the diameter at chest height 315.5 cm. The volume of wood in the tree is around 90 m³. This makes the tree the third largest oak in Central Europe in terms of its wood volume and the largest in Poland.

The name goes back to a legend , according to which Emperor Otto III. I met Bolesław the Brave under this oak, which is impossible, since both had died about 200 years when the oak germinated.

Pope John Paul II consecrated acorns of the oak on April 28, 2004 during a pilgrimage of foresters to the Vatican . 500 seedlings were grown from them in the Rudy Raciborskie nursery . The seedlings were certified and planted across the country in memory of the Polish Pope.

On November 18, 2014, the oak burned, probably from arson.

Individual evidence

  1. In the literature, Piotrowice is always mentioned as the location because of its proximity to the place, but the tree is exactly on the border.
