Chrysogonus Waddell OCSO (born March 1, 1930 in the Philippines , † November 23, 2008 in Gethsemani Abbey in Trappist, Kentucky) was a monk and theologian.

Life

The Trappist Abbey of Gethsemani - professed monastery of Father Chrysogonus Waddell

Thomas Waddell converted to Catholicism as a student of musicology in Philadelphia in 1949 and entered the novitiate of the Trappist Abbey of Gethsemani on August 2, 1950 ; there he made solemn profession on November 1, 1955 and received the religious name Chrysogonus. He was ordained a priest on May 31, 1958 and then went to Rome to do his doctorate at the Benedictine University of Sant'Anselmo . There he began a career as a liturgical scholar and historian, which brought him worldwide recognition. His more than 100 publications on the liturgy history of the Cistercian order are an essential contribution to the history of the order in the 20th century and represent the latest state of research. Like his brother Thomas Merton , Father Chrysogonus lived for decades apart from the abbey, in a remote hermitage. Nevertheless, he served as a rain choir and accompanied solemn liturgies on the organ. He was intensively involved in the monastic liturgical reform after the Second Vatican Council and translated many parts of it into English. He was a member of the International Commission on English in the Liturgy (ICEL) and a sought-after speaker at conferences in Germany and abroad.

He died on the feast of Christ the King .
