life and work

Ann Arbor

John Robert Sommerfeldt wanted to enter the Trappist Abbey of Gethsemani , but had to refrain from doing so for health reasons. He studied from 1951 at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and received his doctorate in 1960 with the thesis Consistency of thought in the works of Bernard of Clairvaux. A study of mystical leadership in the twelfth century (summarized under the title “The Epistemological value of Mysticism in the thought of Bernard of Clairvaux” in: Studies in medieval culture , edited by himself, Kalamazoo 1964).

Kalamazoo

Then he went to the Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo , where he founded the Medieval Institute and organized a biennial congress from 1962 (from 1970 annually) on medieval studies ( Conference on medieval studies , from 1979 International Congress on Medieval Studies ), to which he mainly also invited young researchers and who, among other things, developed extraordinarily because of the favorable central location of Kalamazoo and which later became today's Center for Cistercian and Monastic Studies . In 1973 he brought the publishing house Cistercian Publications to Kalamazoo. His successor in the management of the Medieval Institute was Otto Gründler (1928–2004).

Irving (Texas)

In 1977 Sommerfeldt went to the Catholic private university University of Dallas in Irving (Texas) , where Louis Julius Lekai worked, was president of the university (1978-1980), was dean of Constantin College of Liberal Arts and taught medieval history until his retirement.

reputation

Sommerfeldt is considered one of the leading experts on the Cistercians Bernhard von Clairvaux and Aelred von Rievaulx . In 2004 a commemorative publication was published under the title Truth as Gift .
