Chrysostom I.

Chrysostomus I (born September 27, 1927 in Statos, Paphos district , † December 22, 2007 ) was a Cypriot clergyman and archbishop .

Chrysostomus I studied theology and literature at the University of Athens . He was ordained a deacon in February 1951 and a priest in October 1961. In 1968 he was elected Bishop of Constantia before becoming Bishop of Paphos in July 1973 . Chrysostom I was the successor to Makarios III. and as Archbishop of Cyprus from 1977 to 2006 head of the Cypriot Orthodox Church .

His health had been impaired since a fall in 2000 and was no longer able to perform the administration of the Church of Cyprus. After mediation by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, His Holiness Bartholomew I , His Holiness Chrysostomos II (Englistriotis) was elected as successor at a special synod in November 2006 .
