The Chugach National Forest is a National Forest in the US state of Alaska . It covers an area of ​​23,000 km² in South Central Alaska from the Copper River delta in the east to Prince William Sound to the Kenai Peninsula in the west. In the north it borders on Alaska's youngest mountain range, the Chugach Mountains . It is made up of the terran Chugach and Prince William .

The Chugach National Forest was designated on the initiative of William Langille, the later administrator of the Tongass National Forest , on July 23, 1907 by Theodore Roosevelt . The aim was to protect the tree population, to regulate hunting and fishing and to introduce organized fire protection. The national forest is the northernmost and the second largest in the United States Forest Service . The forest administration is located in Anchorage .

Flora and fauna

The Chugach National Forest consists largely of coastal rainforest with Sitka spruce , hemlock , birch and aspens . Grow in clearings forest fireweed , lupine , hogweed , Cuckoo Flower and Sitka valerian . Above the tree line , thickets of alders and devil's clubs, the only representatives of the ginseng family in Alaska, have formed. In higher regions, sub-alpine meadows spread out, which eventually turn into tundra .

Almost all of Alaska's land mammals are found in the part of the Chugach National Forest on the Kenai Peninsula. Birds have an ideal habitat on the Copper River. Around 12,000 Dusky Canada geese breed on the river , a subspecies that is unique to this region, as well as a tenth of the world population of Trumpeter Swans .
