Ciarán from Clonmacnoise
Ciarán von Clonmacnoise (* 512 in Fuerty , Roscommon , Connacht ; † September 9, 544 in Clonmacnoise ), also known as Queranus , Kieran or Kiaran the Younger, was the founder and first abbot of the Clonmacnoise monastery . He is mainly venerated as a saint in Ireland and assigned to the Twelve Apostles of Ireland .
Life
According to tradition, Ciarán was the son of a carpenter and wagon builder named Beoit. He was born in Roscommon in 512, according to other sources 516, and came to Clonard Monastery at an early age , where he was brought up by Finnian along with Columban and Brendan . Ciarán became a monk in Clonard . He was considered the most learned of his fellow brothers, and so he became the tutor of the daughter of the king of Cuala. From the year 534 he lived with Enda von Aran for seven years as a hermit on the island of Inishmore , later in Central Ireland. There he met Senan . He was expelled from his monastery because his generosity towards the poor is said to have endangered the abbey's wealth. Then he lived with eight brothers again on Inishmore in Dún Angus until he founded the Clonmacnoise monastery near Athlone in January 544, of which he became the first abbot. He gave this monastery a strict rule because he was interested in monks who wanted to renounce the world completely .
Ciarán died on September 9, 544 in the monastery he had founded.
effect
The Clonmacnoise monastery founded by Ciarán was regarded as a refuge of learning until its dissolution in 1552, so shortly before the year 1100 the oldest surviving Irish-language manuscript, the Lebor na hUidre, was created there . The rule of monks he set up also proved to be influential, with around half of all Irish monasteries following this rule.
Ciarán is one of the few Irish saints who is also mentioned in martyrologies on the mainland. It is mentioned in the Martyrologium of Usuard and in the Martyrologium Sangallensis from the 10th century. In the oldest descriptions of life, which were written in the 12th century, his life story is often drawn parallel to that of Jesus , for example when his father was a carpenter and his death at the age of 33. He is often confused with Saigir's Ciarán .
His feast day is September 9th.
