Roscommon ( Irish : Ros Comáin ) is a city in the western central interior of the Republic of Ireland and the capital of the county of the same name .
history
The name Roscommons is derived from Saint Comán , who built a monastery on the site of the current place in the 5th century . The forests around the monastery were known as Cománs Forest, or Ros Comáin in Irish . This was later Anglicized to Roscommon .
In 1253 a Dominican monastery was founded here by Felim O'Connor, a King in Connacht . The castle in Roscommon , built in 1269, is the ruin of an Anglo-Norman fortification.
present
Today, Roscommon, away from the major traffic flows, is most likely to have the importance of a market town for the rural area. The population of Roscommons was determined in the 2016 Census at 5876 people. With the Dr. Hyde Park has had the city since 1969, however, an event location of national importance; the stadium of the Gaelic Athletic Association . It originally held 30,000 visitors, but the capacity was reduced to 18,500 in 2011. The stadium is also home to the local Gaelic football and hurling teams. Southeast of Roscommon is Lough Ree, one of the three great lakes in the Shannon .
The nearest major towns are Longford to the northeast and Athlone to the southeast; from Dublin in the east, Roscommon is 145 km away, from Galway in a south-westerly direction 75 km, accessible via the N63 . Bus Éireann connects Roscommon several times a day with Busáras in Dublin as with the other major Irish cities. To the rail transport in Ireland is Roscommon - still connected - unlike many other Irish cities of its size; the station was opened in 1860.
Since the majority of citizens voted against the introduction of same-sex marriage, Roscommon has been considered the most conservative place in Ireland. In the referendum on the liberalization of the abortion ban, however, the majority of citizens voted yes.
