Cimon or officially CIMON ( C rew I nteractive MO bile Companio N ) is a shaped head AI robot in the international space station is used (ISS).

The device is the world's first flying and autonomously acting assistant for astronauts with artificial intelligence . The development and construction was commissioned by the space management of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) with funds from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) and implemented by Airbus Defense and Space in Friedrichshafen and Bremen . The Watson AI technology from the IBM Cloud is used as voice-controlled artificial intelligence and the project was co-developed and supervised by scientists from the Ludwig Maximilians University Munich (LMU) clinic . The project team from DLR, Airbus, IBM and LMU has been working on the implementation since August 2016. The robot was brought to the ISS space station with a SpaceX spaceship on June 29, 2018 , where it successfully performed tasks together with Alexander Gerst .

The model was Professor Simon Wright from the animated series Captain Future , the "flying brain" with sensors, cameras and a speech processor. CIMON weighs around five kilograms and was made from plastic using 3D printing . He can see through cameras , hear through eight microphones , and speak through a loudspeaker . He can follow commands, but is not equipped for independent learning.

The project team around CIMON was awarded the German Innovation Prize in the large company category in 2019 .

The prototype CIMON-1 landed back on earth in August 2019 and was brought back to Airbus in Friedrichshafen. An improved successor, CIMON-2, launched on December 5, 2019 and will remain on the space station ISS for up to three years.
