Cipocereus is a genus of plants fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The botanical name of the genus is derived from Serra do Cipó in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais , where one of the species was found.

description

The bushy and columnar growing species of the genus Cipocereus are sometimes much branched and reach heights of growth of up to 3.5 meters. The cylindrical, somewhat woody shoots are 2 to 5 centimeters in diameter. On the 4 to 21 ribs there are round, white or brown areoles from which a few to many thorns arise, which can sometimes be missing and are of variable shape.

The white, tubular flowers open at night and sometimes stay open until the following day. The pericarpel and the flower tube are ribbed, more or less round in cross section and coated with a thick blue wax. The scales are narrow and far apart.

The spherical to egg-shaped, non-tearing fruits are overgrown with an intense gray-blue color. The remnants of the flowers are persistent. The brownish black to black, more or less matt seeds are broadly oval and 1 to 2 millimeters long.
