Cipriano Forjaz

Cipriano Forjaz was a Portuguese colonial administrator.

In 1885 he took over the post of governor of the Portuguese Timor colony from João Maria Pereira , but was replaced in the same year by the new governor Alfredo de Lacerda Maia . In 1890 Forjaz was again entrusted with the administration of the governor's post as government secretary, until he was finally raised officially to governor in 1891.

His predecessor António Francisco da Costa (1887 to 1888) had tried to expand Portugal's military and administrative control over his colony, including through a more effective tax collection system. The colonial administration thus drew the anger of the Liurais (Timorese petty kings). This finally discharged under Cipriano Forjaz in 1893 in the revolt of Maubara . The ruler of Maubara attacked the military posts Dato and Vatuboro ( Fatuboro ), killing several soldiers. At the same time, he offered the Dutch to place themselves under their suzerainty again, as it had been before 1859. Governor Forjaz then called in the gunboat Diu for assistance. By November the rebels were again under Portuguese control. However, as a result of the many rotting dead, cholera broke out, which then raged in the neighboring regions.
