The gunboat Diu was a Portuguese Navy warship that entered service in 1889. The Diu , a single ship, had a water displacement of 729 tons (other source: 717 tons), three masts and an additional steam drive. The hull was made of wood. It was named after the city of Diu in Portuguese India .

history

The Diu

In 1893 a revolt broke out in Maubara . Governor Cipriano Forjaz of Portuguese Timor called on the Diu for support. It took the Diu just eight days to travel from Macau to Dili , where it arrived on June 21. Just a few decades ago, such a quick response would not have been possible. Shortly afterwards, the Diu shot at Vatuboro with its Krupp cannons and Hotchkiss rapid fire guns. Then Dato was also shot at and a landing squad was released. It consisted of 37 African soldiers, 220 warriors from Liquiçá , 60 from Maubara , 96 Moradores and 204 other soldiers. By November the rebels were again under Portuguese control. However, as a result of the many rotting dead, cholera broke out, which then raged in the neighboring regions.

In 1897 João do Canto e Castro was commandant of the Diu . During this time he carried out hydrographic surveys on the coast of Mozambique .

The Diu remained in service until 1918 (other source: 1922) and was in service between Angola , Mozambique, Portuguese India, Macao and Portuguese Timor. She covered about 100,000 nautical miles and transported troops, settlers and convicts.

Others

In 1926 the new gunboat Diu with 403 tons was put into service by the Portuguese Navy.
