The competition has been held a few days after the end of the Tour d'Algérie since 2011 and belongs to category 1.2 of the UCI Africa Tour . The Circuit d'Alger is organized by the Algerian Cycling Federation and the same teams take part as before in the Tour d'Algérie. Since 1949, the Algeria tour has regularly ended with a stage in the capital, Algiers, but since the tour was revived as an international race in 2011, the final laps in Algiers have formed a separate competition.

Azzedine Lagab is honored as the winner of the Tour of Algeria after the Circuit d'Alger 2011.

In 2011 the race was held on July 2nd. With the relocation of the Tour d'Algérie to March, the Circuit d'Alger also moved back on the calendar and thus continues to mark the end of the Algeria tour, but does not count towards the overall ranking. The circuit is topographically demanding and also has a few climbs. The first edition of the race was 74 kilometers long and ended on May 1st in Algiers. The local Azzedine Lagab , who had previously won the Tour of Algeria, won the sprint against Adil Jelloul from Morocco . The following year the race was 105 kilometers long, started at the Moufdi Zakaria Palace of Culture and won after a total of 10 laps by the Greek Ioannis Tamouridis , who - as in the previous year in a two-man sprint - prevailed against Aron Debretsion Baranceal from Eritrea .
