Coordinates: 41 ° 31 ′ 39 " N , 8 ° 18 ′ 57" W.
Citânia de Briteiros is an old ruined city around 22 km east of Braga in Portugal . They are relics of ancient dwellings ( Citânias ) of the Celtiberians from around 800 BC. Chr.
It is a mountain settlement, one of many relics of the ancient dwellings of the Celtiberians (around 800 BC) that was uncovered by the archaeologist Martins Sarmento ( 1833 - 1899 ) before 1880. The excavation area has a size of 240 x 300 m and is located within a triple wall ring on Monte de São Romão . Here there are around 160 house foundations made of large stone blocks joined together. The original roof was made of straw. The houses can be reached through a network of cobbled streets and alleys that is difficult to walk through today. You can still find stone walls, water pipes and water channels along the streets. Two reconstructed round huts with thatched roofs stand on the hill. The most important finds are now exhibited in the Museu da Sociedade de Martins Sarmento in Guimarães . The excavations are still ongoing. One of the most visited areas of the excavation is the Pedra Formosa .
