The Cité Internationale is a new district in Lyon . The district is located on the knee of the Rhône at the Parc de la Tête d'Or . It takes up the place where the Lyon fair used to be held.

The district can be reached by bus lines C1, C4, C5 and C26 and stops at Cité Internationale-Center de congrès et Cité Internationale-Transbordeur .

history

In 1984 the Lyon exhibition center moved to Chassieu ( Euroexpo ). The area was thus free for a new urban development project on which several mayors have worked ( Michel Noir , Raymond Barre and Gérard Collomb , under which the first studies for a congress palace were developed).

In 1985, the then mayor, Francisque Collomb , announced an international competition, which Renzo Piano won. He was then also the one who designed the whole of the Cité. In 1987 the SEM Cité Internationale was founded, which was then converted into a ZAC in 1988 .

In 1989 Michel Noir became mayor of Lyon. At first the city administration and the architect had pleaded for the buildings of the former exhibition center to be retained in order to build the Cité Internationale, but they were eventually torn down as the renovation costs would have been higher. In 1989 a PAZ ( German: Plan for the reorganization of an area ), which replaced the ZAC . The construction of further buildings is still being discussed, for example the construction of a tower.

In 1992 a further building area ( ZAC ) of 32 hectares was decided. For this purpose, the first building permits were issued in 1993, and work then began in 1993. In 1998, the PAZ was changed again to allow for new renovations, including the future Lyon congress center . The MAC was completed in the same year, the Marriott Hotel (ex-Hilton) in 1999, the Le Pharao Casino in 2000 and the first apartments in 2001. The expansion of the congress center was decided in 2002 and started in 2003.

The Cité was completed in 2006 with the Hotel Crowne Plaza Lyon - Cité Internationale . The large amphitheater was inaugurated on June 1, 2006, the first congress to use this infrastructure was that of the French insurance group : Mutualité on June 15, 2006.
