City Island is a small island in the urban area of New York City with a village character. It used to belong to Pelham in Westchester County , now it is part of the Bronx in New York City. According to the United States Census 2010 , 4,362 people live on the island.

location and size

City Island is at the far western end of Long Island Sound , south of Pelham Bay and east of Eastchester Bay . East of the island is the even smaller and uninhabited island of Hart Island , which can be reached by ferry from the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision from the pier on Fordham Street for authorized persons. Hart Island is a restricted area, unauthorized entry is a criminal offense. On the northeast side of the island is the private island of High Island , connected by a private bridge . CBS Radio maintains a broadcasting station here.

City Island is 2.4 km long and 0.8 km wide and covers almost exactly one square kilometer.

reachability

During the 1890s through 1919, the island was served by the Pelham Park and City Island Railroad . Today buses (BX29 and BxM8) run from the New York City subway station Pelham Bay Park ( subway line 6 ) over the City Island Bridge. There are several stops on the island.

activities

The island is famous for its seafood restaurants, which attract many visitors every year. There are over 25 on the island, one of the most famous is the Lobster Box with its 250 seats. A few of the restaurants close in the winter months, but most are open year round. Lobster is a popular specialty on the island. City Island also has three yacht clubs and several other commercial marinas . The City Island Nautical Museum displays maritime artifacts and antiques. It is located at 190 Fordham Street and is only open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. There is also a diving base on the island.

  • The film Meet the Rizzos is largely set on City Island.
  • The 15th episode of the first season of Unforgettable , The King of City Island ( The Following Sea ) also takes place on the island.
