Clara Bow is a Hamburg based indie punk rock band. The band from Hamburg-St. Pauli plays a mixture of indie , punk , power pop and new wave . The band is named after the US actress Clara Bow , who gained popularity in the 1920s and shaped the style of the it girl .

history

The band was founded at the end of 2003 by Katrin Hesse (vocals, guitar), Vera Weiss (vocals, guitar; left the band in 2009), Phyllis Schürger (drums) and Sabine Oberg, geb. Scheppner (bass; today with Earthship). Temporary member was Catharina Rüß (keyboard; then at Glacier , previously at Peeptoes). Ingrid Müller (keyboard) has been part of the band since 2006. The band has been playing in their current line-up since 2010, when Jeannine joined Alice Rüdiger (bass).

The band formed during the Ladyfest Hamburg 2003, where Katrin Hesse also worked as a DJ . Male members were deliberately avoided in the band in order to provide a counterweight to the male-dominated rock scene. The band was also involved in events against right-wing extremism, such as the anti-Nazi festival in Eisenach, or against gentrification, such as a concert in Knust regarding the conversion of the Schanzenturm to the Mövenpick Hotel or the inauguration of the cooperative's square in the Karolinenviertel .

After various demo recordings as well as numerous club and open air concerts, Clara Bow's official debut album, Not Now, was released on May 18, 2012. The release party took place on May 16, 2012 in the Hamburg club Golem. The debut Not Now has been rated by numerous critics as noteworthy. The album was released by Smarten-Up in cooperation with Bow Records. It was produced by the Hamburg musician and producer Ben Schadow and mastered by Kai Blankenberg. Rough Trade took over the distribution , the publishers are Smarten-Up and BMG .
