Clara Castle ( Irish Caisleán Chláraigh ) is a tower house or peel tower about 6 km east of Kilkenny in County Kilkenny , Ireland , near one of the headwaters of the River Nore . The building is considered a national monument .
history
Clara Castle was built by the Shortall family in the late 15th or early 16th centuries and lived there until about 1640. Henry Johnson lived at the castle in Cromwell's time ; later it fell to the Byrnes . For example, Anthony Byrne (1656-1720), Lewis Byrne (1690-1766), Mathew Byrne (1694-1754), Anthony Byrne (1725-1810) and Michael Byrne (1762-1835) lived there. Clara Castle was inhabited until 1905.
description
Clara Castle is five stories high; the ceiling above the 2nd floor is vaulted . On the north side there is a fence (a so-called bawn ), about 10 meters by 22 meters. Many original oak doors and ceiling beams have been preserved in the castle .
There is a "killer hole" above the entrance; the entrance is also protected by a gate and a drawbar.
On the first floor, which presumably served as the main bedroom, there is a roofed mantelpiece, a wall corridor, a lavatory and a small bedroom. This room was originally painted in blue and there is a wall painting of a crucifix on one wall .
There is a secret room on the floor above .
The room on the 3rd floor is the largest and best-lit room in the castle; it served as the family's living room . Its large, with a fall -provided, fireplace was installed later; the original fireplace in this room must have been in the middle.
The roof above is from modern times, while the parapets are provided with Irish battlements , as well as shooting slots , a walkway, a machiculus and water drains.
