Coolhill Castle

Coolhill Castle ( Irish Caisleán na Cúlchoille ) is a donjon 2.1 km northeast of the village The Rower ( An Robhar ) in County Kilkenny, Ireland . It lies on a cliff above the River Barrow . It is considered a national monument .

history

Coolhill Castle was built around the 13th century. Henry de Rupe (also de Roache or de Roche ) owned 1318 lands in Coolhill. Art Óg mac Murchadha Caomhánach held the castle for a short time during one of his raids. In the 1600s, about 30 De Rupe followers were massacred by English soldiers under De la Poer in the village of Rosbercon . In 1621 the castle fell to the Mountgarret family and was confiscated by the Roundheads in 1652 .

description

The castle consists of two towers: one is a round donjon and the other is a square tower on the property east of the former.

The donjon has a small lead to the south. The entrance on the north side is protected by a maschikuli and there is another entrance to the east of it. A "killer hole" protects both entrances.

A spiral staircase in the wall leads to the upper floors. The downstairs room has large alcoves and a vaulted ceiling with some wicker marks . There are another three floors above the vault. There is an open fireplace on the first floor. On the 2nd floor there is an open fireplace and a lavatory and a separate staircase to the roof. There are individual round or cross-shaped loopholes .
