Clarence Powers Bill

Clarence Powers Bill (born July 10, 1875 in Cuyahoga Falls , Ohio , † March 16, 1966 in Cleveland , Ohio) was an American classical philologist . He worked from 1898 to 1946 at Western Reserve University .

Life

Clarence Powers Bill, the son of Herbert Weston Bill and Mary McIlwain Bill, studied Classical Philology at Adelbert College of Western Reserve University , where he received his Bachelor's degree (B.A.) in 1894 and his Master's degree (M.A.) in 1895 . He continued his studies at Harvard University , where he obtained a second master's degree (A.M.) in 1896 and his Ph. D. in 1898 .

In 1898, Bill returned to Western Reserve University as an instructor in Classics, where he continued his career. In 1904 he was appointed Associate Professor of Greek and in 1905 Professor of Greek. In 1907 he married Sarah Amanda Babbitt, a Latin teacher at East High School in Cleveland, who had received a research fellowship to Athens in 1906/1907. The couple had a son and a daughter.

In 1912/1913 Bill was visiting professor and acting director at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens . From 1916 to 1925 he was Treasurer of the American Philological Association and also editor of its journal, the Transactions and Proceedings of the American Philological Association . For 1927/1928 he was elected President of the American Philological Association. From 1928 he worked as a Department Head at Western Reserve University. In 1946 he retired.

In addition to his work at the university and for the American Philological Association, Bill rarely got the chance to get his own research published. He was engaged in ancient sports, Greek topography and vase painting .
