Clarice Modeste-Curwen

Clarice Modeste-Curwen is a Grenadian politician with the New National Party (NNP) who was Foreign Minister between 2014 and 2016.

Life

Clarice Modeste-Curwen completed her school education at St. Rose Secondary School and then worked as a science teacher at Waltham Junior Secondary School between 1972 and 1979 . She was also a graduate of the St. Lucia Teachers Technical Training College , before she left school in 1980 and began studying medicine at the University of Havana . After graduation, she returned to Grenada and worked first as a doctor and then since 1989 as the medical director of the General Hospital . In 1996 she also took on a teaching position for clinical skills and behavioral sciences at the medical faculty of St. George's University, founded in 1976, and in 1997 became head of the ophthalmology department .

Due to her many years of service as a teacher and doctor, Clarice Modeste-Curwen was appointed a member of the Senate of Grenada in 1998 and at the same time she was Junior Minister for Health. In the January 18, 1999 elections, she was elected as a candidate for the New National Party (NNP) in the Parish of St. Mark constituency to be a member of the House of Representatives and was appointed Minister of Health and Environment to the Cabinet by Prime Minister Keith Claudius Mitchell . In this role, she was involved in the construction of the new central hospital, the implementation of the World Bank- supported project against HIV / AIDS, and the establishment of the cardiology program run by the government and St. George's University, as well as access to rural health services. As part of a cabinet reshuffle after the November 27, 2003 election, she took over the post of Minister for Communications, Public Works and Transport, and in this role she was responsible for the measures against and after Hurricane Emily in July 2005 . In addition to building apartments, she was particularly entrusted with the reconstruction of roads, bridges, rural facilities, police stations, schools and children's facilities. After another cabinet reshuffle, she acted as Minister for Tourism, Civil Aviation, Culture and Performing Arts between 2007 and the defeat of the NNP in the July 8, 2008 elections. In this position she worked for the construction of tourist facilities such as the Fort Louis Marina, the Esplanade marina, the Melville Street bus station and the Bruce Street Mall.

After the landslide victory in the elections on February 19, 2013, in which the NNP won all 15 seats in the House of Representatives, Clarice Modeste-Curwen was appointed Minister for Health and Social Security in his new government by Prime Minister Keith Claudius Mitchell. In the course of a cabinet reshuffle, she became Grenada's first foreign minister on November 13, 2014 with effect from December 1, 2014 as the successor to Nickolas Steele . She held the office of Foreign Minister until she was replaced by Elvin G. Nimrod in a recent cabinet reshuffle, in which she herself became Minister for Tourism, Civil Aviation, Culture and Cooperatives.
