Keith Claudius Mitchell (born November 12, 1946 in Happy Hill , St. George’s Congregation , Grenada ) was Prime Minister of Grenada from 1995 to 2008 and has been Prime Minister again since 2013 .

His party, the New National Party (NNP), has held all 15 seats in parliament since the February 19, 2013 election.

biography

The Rt. Hon. Keith C. Mitchell, son of Dowlyn and Catherine Mitchell , completed elementary school at Happy Hill Roman Catholic School and JW Fletcher Memorial School. His secondary school education was at Presentation Brothers College . From 1967 to 1971 he studied mathematics and chemistry on the West Hill ( Barbados ) campus of the University of West India and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree , followed by a postgraduate degree in mathematics at Howard University from 1973, which he completed with a master's degree in 1975 . In the meantime he taught from 1972 to 1973 at the "Presentation Brothers College". Immediately after completing his Howard studies, he completed another degree at American University to obtain a doctorate in mathematics and statistics (1979). He had held the chair of mathematics at Howard University since 1977, which he held until 1983.

Mitchell is married and has one son.

Political offices and duties

Mitchell also served as a qualified advisor to several US government departments and private associations in the United States before returning to Grenada, where he served as a member of the House of Representatives for St. George's Northwest in 1984, where he was a member for 20 years. From 1988 to 1989 he was Minister for Communications, Labor, Public Services, Cooperatives, Women's Affairs and Civil Aviation for the NNP. With the relapse of the NNP into the opposition role, he was appointed party leader in 1989 and helped the party to victory in 1995.

On June 22, 1995 he became Grenada's first prime minister and minister responsible for national security, mobilization, Carriacou and Petit Martinique affairs, finance, trade, industry and planning, information and foreign affairs. In 1999 the NNP won again, this time in all 15 constituencies. In continuation of his office as Prime Minister, he was initially responsible for the areas of national security, finance, trade, industry and planning and information, and later responsible for national security and information.

With the third consecutive entry into parliament as a ruling party, Mitchell became Prime Minister again and was now responsible for national security, human workforce development, information, information and communication technology, the economy, private sector and youth development. He was also responsible for Science, Technology and Human Workforce Development for the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM) since July 1995 .

After the defeat of his NNP against the previous opposition New Democratic Party in the House of Representatives elections on July 8, 2008, he lost his post as Prime Minister to the chairman of the NDC, Tillman Thomas .

After the election victory of the NNP on February 19, 2013, he was again Prime Minister on February 20, 2013.

Other offices and functions

Mitchell was Chairman of CARICOM from January 1998 to December 2004, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Caribbean Development Bank from May 1997 to May 1998, Chairman of the Administrative Council of the Community of Caribbean States from 1996 to 1997, and Chairman of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States from May 2000 to January 2002 and from April 2001 to March 2002 Chairman of the Regional Security System .

He has been an active cricket athlete since 1964 and is very committed to this sport today. Among other things, he is a board member of the premier administrative cricket sub-committee of CARICOM.
