Clarke James Carlisle (born October 14, 1979 in Preston ) is a retired English football player . He prefers to play in the position of a defender .

Career

Carlisle began his career as a teenager with Blackpool FC in 1997 before being brought in by the Queens Park Rangers for a quarter of a million pounds in 2000 . In 2004 he moved to Leeds United and after a year to Watford FC , who loaned him to Luton Town for one season . From 2007 he played after a long knee injury and personal problems at Burnley FC as a central defender, from where he was loaned to Preston North End in 2011 and Northampton Town in 2012.

In 2012 he signed a one-year contract with the then fourth division club York City . He returned to Northampton on loan in November 2012, before signing a new contract with Northampton through the summer of 2013 in January 2013. On May 23, 2013, Carlisle announced his retirement as an active soccer player.
