Claude Callot

Claude Callot (* 1620 in Nancy ; † August 21, 1687 in Breslau ) was a French painter in the service of the kings of Poland .

Claude Callot was the son of Jean Callot, Herald of Lorraine and Bar , and Charlotte de Flondres, his brother Jean succeeded the father as herald, his brother Dominique Abbot of the Abbey of l'Étanche .

In 1640 Callot went to Rome . Around 1650 he painted at the court of Princess Luisa Maria Gonzaga in Mantua , through his marriage to two Polish kings, Władysław IV. Wasa and Johann II. Casimir , Queen of Poland. From 1666 he worked in Poland as a court painter for the kings Johann II Casimir, Michael Wiśniowiecki and Johann III. Sobieski . He lived in Wilanów , where he created works for the royal palace , especially paintings but also ceiling paintings for the library of the palace. In 1686 he moved to Breslau, where he wrote his will on December 23, 1686. His grave is in the Church of St. Vincent in Wroclaw.
