action
Uschi is 16 years old and is learning to be a saleswoman in the HO clothing store at Berlin Alexanderplatz station . When she was allowed to show off clothes one day and she liked it, she got the idea of becoming a mannequin . But her parents, with whom she lives with her brother in East Berlin , do not agree to this.
After work, Uschi always meets with her friends and sometimes they go to the cinema together in West Berlin . One evening Uschi only accompanies her friend Karin to the cinema, but doesn't go in because she doesn't feel like it. On a stall she wants a candy shop for snacking, the dealer wants while her Eastern money accept, but can not change the bill. The nearby youth with the nickname “Lord” notices this and pays the sum. She likes his funny, carefree manner and also his portable radio; so she goes for a walk with him. But his friend Hans immediately fell in love with Uschi and tries to win her over. Hans and Lord earn their living as West Berliners washing large luxury limousines in a car wash. But one day, due to a lack of demand, that will end. Lord goes to Hamburg to try his luck there, and Hans is looking for a new job in West Berlin which, after many unsuccessful attempts, he also finds in a demolition company.
With his unyielding manner, Hans slowly achieves success with Uschi and a tender love develops between the two. They spend a lot of time together until one day, during heavy rain, he takes her to a friend's apartment, who he knows where the key is. Uschi suspects that it is his, but he also lives with his mother. Since Uschi comes home late more and more often, there is trouble with her parents. It goes so far that she decides to go away and move in with Hans. But a young woman opens his alleged apartment, who explains to her that it is not his apartment and gives her his correct address.
Hans has had an accident at work in the meantime and his arm is in a cast. Now he has no work again. Since he does not have an apartment of his own and cannot afford one as an unemployed person, Uschi moves back to live with her parents in East Berlin. There she reconciles with them again and is given permission to bring Hans with her once.

criticism
Me. Writes in the Neue Zeit :
“A Berlin romance - a definitely interesting entertainment film on an important topic. Young love in a divided Berlin, additional difficulties to a problem that is not always easy for young people anyway. But no limit is so strong, they love and kiss each other. And one day love and understanding will finally triumph over mistrust and border barriers. "
For the lexicon of international film , the film , which was made before the Wall was built, is a comedy whose unpathetic romanticism is close to Italian neorealism. It is an interesting contemporary document, especially in some tendentiously drawn descriptions of the various milieus.
