The first German C&A branch was opened on the site in 1911 and existed until the expropriation by the GDR in 1949. The building was initially used as a clothing store by the state trade organization . On December 18, 1956, the nationality restaurant Haus Bucharest opened on the ground floor , until it had to move out at the end of 1967 to create new sales space for the Centrum grocery store , which was planned to be demolished on the opposite side . The HO clothing store at Rathausstrasse 33 was demolished in 1974 and the site was incorporated into the landscaped open space around the television tower. After the political changes in the GDR in 1989/1990 and German reunification , the C&A owner family Brenninkmeijer got the 2,655 square meter site back.

The client for the Alea 101 building was Redevco Services Germany . In 2009 the investor carried out a cooperative implementation competition together with the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development and the Central District Office. On November 26th, 2009, a jury voted in favor of the design by the Berlin architecture firm Sauerbruch Hutton .

The first tree felling work was carried out on January 19, 2012, construction began on January 20, 2012. The foundation stone was laid on November 29, 2012.

After the general contractor, Alpine Bau , filed for bankruptcy on March 19, 2013 , construction work was suspended until July 17, 2013 and has continued since then. The building was completed in September 2014.
