Claude Félix Abel Niépce de Saint-Victor (born July 26, 1805 in Saint-Cyr near Chalon-sur-Saône ; † April 7, 1870 in Paris ; writing variants: Claude Felix Abel Niépce de Saint Victor or Saint-Victor ; Claude Marie Francois Niepce de Saint-Victor ) was a French chemist , inventor, and photographer . He is the nephew of the photography pioneer Joseph Nicéphore Niépce .

Life

Niepce de Saint-Victor attended the military school in Saumur , joined a dragoon regiment as an officer, served as a lieutenant in the French army in the Paris municipal guard from 1845 to 1848, and became second in command of the Louvre in 1854 .

During this career he eagerly followed his uncle's work, particularly those related to heliography , and ran a chemical laboratory in Saint Martin, a suburb of Paris. In 1847 he invented a method for creating photographs on glass using the albumin method , making him one of the first to attempt photography on glass ; He thereby opened a new era for photography and paved the way for the application of collodion (see wet collodion method ).

Together with Alexandre Becquerel, Niepce de Saint-Victor produced one of the first color photographs , which, however, he was not yet able to fix permanently and reliably; Gabriel Lippmann succeeded for the first time in 1891.

1857–1861 Niépce de Saint-Victor also discovered that uranium salts emit “invisible radiation”.
