Claude Hillaire-Marcel

Claude Hillaire-Marcel (born April 1, 1944 in Salies-de-Béarn ) is a French-Canadian geologist, marine geologist, oceanographer and geochemist who specializes in Quaternary geology and isotope geochemistry. He was a professor at the Université du Québec à Montréal .

Hillaire-Marcel studied at the Sorbonne with a diploma in 1967 (DES, Diplôme d'études secondaires) and received his doctorate in 1979 from the University of Paris VI . In 1969 he became professor of geology at the University of Quebec in Montreal. 1983 to 1985 and 1987 to 1989 he headed the Faculty of Geosciences and later that of Environmental Research. From 1981 to 1989 (and again from 1997 to 1999) he was founding director of the University's Center de recherche en géochimie et géodynamique (GEOTOP).

He was involved in many oceanographic expeditions on Canadian and French research vessels, mostly around Canada and the Arctic, for example in the Labrador Sea and off Greenland. He also conducted research worldwide in Central and South America, Africa, the Middle East and Europe.

In 2001 he was co-author of a work that described oscillations in the ocean currents and temperatures in the Arctic Ocean north of Alaska in the last 10,000 years (by up to 5 degrees in the Middle Holocene, from sediment cores in the Chukchi Sea ) and indications that ocean temperatures are at times significant higher than today (3 to 7 degrees higher in the Middle Holocene than today). The variations were greater than the recent changes over the past 100 years and were not due to changes in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

In a Nature article from 2001 he demonstrated that there was no Labrador deep water as an intermediate layer in the last interglacial period and that this only formed 7000 years ago.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada . In 2001 he received the Michel Jurdant Prize, in 2002 the Prix Marie-Victorin of Quebec, in 2003 the WA Johnston Medal and in 2006 the Logan Medal . He is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science .
