Claude Vivier (born April 14, 1948 in Montréal ; † March 7, 1983 in Paris ) is considered one of the most important Canadian composers of the 20th century.

Life

Claude Vivier was born on April 14, 1948 in Montréal to unknown parents, adopted at the age of three and raised a Catholic. At first he aspired to the priesthood. At the age of 18, however, he was expelled from the seminary for “lack of maturity”.

From 1967 to 1971 he studied at the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal with Gilles Tremblay (composition) and Irving Heller (piano). He then came to Europe, where he studied at the Institute for Sonology at the University of Utrecht with Gottfried Michael Koenig and in Cologne with Karlheinz Stockhausen at the University of Music .

In 1973 he returned to Canada. As a result, he made long trips to Asia (Japan, Bali) and the Middle East (Iran), which had aesthetic consequences for his thinking and composing. In 1982 he moved to Paris .

Vivier was killed in his apartment on the night of March 7-8, 1983 at the age of 34. A 19-year-old prostitute was convicted of murder.

Vivier's work is primarily characterized by biographical features such as his unknown family origin, the search for his mother, his homosexuality and his religious beliefs.
