Claudiu Ionescu

Claudiu Eugen Ionescu (born August 24, 1959 in Constanța ) is a former Romanian handball goalkeeper .

Ionescu started playing handball at CSȘ Constanța at the age of 13 and later moved to Dinamo Bucharest . With the club from the capital, he became Romanian champion in 1978 and cup winner in 1982. In 1983 Dinamo reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup , which was lost to SKA Minsk .

Ionescu made 30 international appearances for the Romanian national team . At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, he won the bronze medal. The Romanian team was level on points with the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia after the group games, but came in second due to the goal difference, so that the final was missed. In the game for third place, they won against Hungary. In 1981 Ionescu became student world champion with Romania.
