Claude Jacquand , also Claudius Jacquand , (born December 11, 1803 in Lyon , † April 2, 1878 in Paris ) was a French painter, designer and graphic artist.

Live and act

Jacquand was a student at the Lyon Art Academy (Ecole des Beaux-Arts), he worked in the studio of the painter Fleury Richard from 1821. In 1822 he exhibited works for the first time at the Lyon Salon. In 1824 he was awarded a first class medal at the Paris Salon for the picture Une cour de prison , which shows a prison yard. In the same year Le viatique, intérieur , L'oiseau tue , Le retour de l'école were also exhibited there and in 1827 Thomas More resté fidèle à la religion catholique and Jeanne d'Arc prisonnière des Anglais were on view there. He lived and worked in Lyon until his mother died in 1836. He settled in Paris in 1838. There he was mainly active in the historical genre. His pictures sold well in the 1830s, so Louis-Philippe I bought seven paintings for Versailles alone and commissioned Jacquand to create a series of glass windows in the Chapelle St. Ferdinand in Dreux with motifs on the death of Duchess Adélaïde d'Orléans (1847) to design. When Louis-Philippe was overthrown in 1848, Jacquand received no more royal commissions, as he had no other livelihood but still had to make a living by painting. So he worked from 1852 to 1855 in Boulogne-sur-Mer , where he furnished the hall of honor ( French Salle d'honneur ) of the town hall.

Several of his works were found in the historical museum at Versailles ( Jacques de Molay takes Jerusalem and the chapter of St. John ) and in the Museum des Luxembourg ( public penance in a convent of the hermits at St. Maurice and the last meeting of Charles I of England with his children ) Admission. The inventory of the museum in Neuchatel included Voltaire's arrest in Frankfurt and Rousseau's departure from the Luxembourg-Montmorency family .

Among the more important of his other works are the wall paintings (1858 to 1860) in the Chapel of the Blessed Virgin of St. Philippe du Roule and the easel paintings: The Interrupted Meal , Bonaparte in Nice (1869), Monks buying a Sicilian family from pirates , Gaston de Foix says goodbye to his mother , Columbus and his son (1870), Wilhelm the Silent of Orange , The Death of the Duke of Orléans in the museums of Rotterdam, Hamburg and the Neue Pinakothek in Munich.
