Claus Hessler
Claus Heßler (born June 23, 1969 in Laufach ) is a German drummer , author and drum teacher.
Life
Claus Heßler received clarinet lessons from his father and drum lessons when he was around ten years old. At the age of 19 he began his professional career as a drummer, where teaching was a priority from the start. In 1990 he met Jim Chapin for the first time , who in the following years became one of his most important mentors alongside Dom Famularo.
This was followed by live and studio activities with artists such as Mike Stern , Herb Ellis , Randy Brecker , Ack van Rooyen , Matt Smith , Albert Mangelsdorff , Michael Sagmeister , Larry Coryell , Barbara Dennerlein or the New York Voices , with whom he toured Europe.
Claus Heßler is a representative of open-handed playing , playing with hands that are not crossed. In addition, he edited the two textbooks “Open-Handed Playing” with Dom Famularo. Likewise, Heßler is seen in the international trade press as the legitimate successor of his mentor Chapin, according to whose statement Heßler masters and passes on the "Moeller technology" in its purest form. In this context he is considered to be one of the few people who are familiar with Chapin's concept of “collapsed rudiments”. Historical aspects of drumming and the history of the "rudiments" are the central aspects in his most recent publication "Camp Duty Update". In 2015 he was elected President of Percussion Creativ eV, the largest community for drummers and percussionists in Europe.
Publications
In addition to his book publications, Heßler works as a workshop author for the magazine drums & percussion and writes as a guest author for magazines such as "Drumscene" (Australia) or "Modern Drummer" (USA). Along with Dom Famularo, John Riley and Danny Gottlieb, he is part of the team of authors who wrote the new edition of George Lawrence Stone's book "Accents & Rebounds".
