Richard Clayderman (* 28 December 1953 as Philippe Robert Louis Pagès in Paris ) is a French pianist . The music composed for him attracts the public, is entertaining and is often understood as "romantic". Clayderman became known in German-speaking countries after the piece he played Ballade pour Adeline was broadcast on ZDF on November 24, 1978 as film music in the episode The Player of the crime series Der Alte . TV appearances and collaborations followed in the early 1980s. a. with James Last .

Life

Childhood and youth

Clayderman was born the real name of Philippe Pagès, the son of a French pianist and piano teacher. The family discovered his great talent for the piano early in his youth, which qualified him for admission to the Music Conservatory at the age of twelve .

Career

His international career began in 1976 when he recorded a piece written for Senneville's daughter Adeline as a commissioned pianist for the French producer duo Olivier Toussaint and Paul de Senneville . For the publication of this piece, called Ballade pour Adeline , he adopted the stage name Richard Clayderman, as a reminiscence of his great-grandmother, but above all to avoid a wrong pronunciation of his real name.

The single sold over 22 million copies in 38 states. Since then he has sold over 70 million records worldwide . With the catchy music composed for him, he established himself alongside musicians like André Rieu and Helmut Lotti as representatives of popular classical music .

Many critics describe his skills as "purely commercial" and "only adequate for shallow pop entertainment". Michael Naura formulated his opinion that Clayderman is not a full-fledged pianist with the words: “There are hairdressers and there are pianists. The French Richard Clayderman is a pianor. "

family

Clayderman is married for the second time and has two children, but largely isolates his family from the public. He is considered reserved and introverted.
