Clayton Ince (born July 12, 1972 in Arima , Trinidad and Tobago ) is a former football player from Trinidad and Tobago. Ince is a goalkeeper and currently plays for FC Walsall in the English Football League Two . He is also in the national team of his home country , but is currently only a substitute.
Club career
He began his professional career with Defense Force FC from Trinidad. In the summer of 1999 he negotiated with several clubs in the English professional leagues. When a contract with AFC Wrexham from Wales failed, he signed with Crewe Alexandra from Football League One . There he was only a substitute for Jason Kearton . Therefore, the club tried to sell it from autumn 2000. A loan to Dundee from Scotland, however, ended without use after a month and other teams did not make a suitable offer. In the summer of 2001 he was still the goalkeeper of Crewe Alexandra when Kearton left the club. After more than 200 appearances for Crewe Alexandra, he moved, after his contract expired, to the English Football League Championship at Coventry City for the 2005/06 season , where he was, however, only a substitute again. Before the start of the 2006/07 season, he moved to fourth-rate FC Walsall. By the end of the 2009/10 season, he completed 152 games and finally ended his career.
National team
Ince was the goalkeeper of his country's selection at the 1991 Junior World Cup in Portugal. The team from the Caribbean was eliminated from the tournament after conceding twelve goals in three games after the preliminary round. When the junior selection coach Bertille St. Clair became national coach of Trinidad and Tobago, he built a new team around the team of the tournament in Portugal in 1991. Ince made his debut on April 4, 1997 in a 1-0 defeat against Barbados and was already the goalkeeper of his home country when Trinidad won the Caribbean Cup in the same year. He was voted both the tournament's best goalkeeper and home player of the year for his performance in the competition. In the next few years he completed 62 internationals for his home country, but was ousted by Shaka Hislop at the beginning of the new millennium . Ince was in his home country's final squad for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, but was not used as the third goalkeeper.
