Clemens August von Merveldt

Clemens August von Merveldt (baptized name: Clemens August Maria Ludwig Udalrich) (born July 4, 1722 in Westerwinkel Castle ; † March 7, 1781 in Lembeck Castle ) was the Oberhofmarschall, Elector of Cologne Chamberlain and official coroner in Wolbeck.

Life

Origin and family

Clemens August von Merveldt grew up as the son of Ferdinand Dietrich von Merveldt and his wife Josefa Maria Anna von Westerholt zu Lembeck (1693–1762) together with his siblings Maximilian Ferdinand , Hermann Adolf (* 1718, Order of Malta) and Sophie Ludovica Agnes (1730–1810) , ∞ February 10, 1748 Wilhelm Ferdinand von Galen ) in the ancient Westphalian noble family von Merveldt . On February 4, 1754, he married Antonia Maria Ferdinande von Wolff-Metternich zur Gracht and Wehrden (1733–1778) in Bonn. The children of this marriage were Maria Theresia (* 1756 ∞ Clemens August von Vittinghoff), Ferdinand August Joseph (1759–1834, 1st ∞ 1783 Countess Maria Theresia von Pergen, 2nd ∞ 1806 Baroness Antonie von Twickel), Maria Adolphina Alexandrine ( 1766–1812, ∞ Gerhard Anton Edmund von Loe), Maximilian Friedrich (diplomat and general) and Burchard Paul (canon in Münster and Hildesheim). On June 23, 1779 he married Anna Maria Christiane Fuest called von der Hoven.

Career and work

Clemens August was appointed treasurer of the Electorate of Cologne in 1741 . With the revolt to the knighthood of Münster in 1743, he became a representative in the state parliament , a body made up of the three estates. His task was to regulate the tax system and from 1774 also the feuding system in the bishopric of Münster. Four years later he held the post of chief cook of the prince-bishop . In 1752 he received a cathedral praise in Münster , which he renounced two years later in favor of his brother Maximilian Ferdinand. In 1761 he was appointed chief hunter in Vest Recklinghausen, and on October 22, 1766, he was appointed to the official resignation in Wolbeck. His son Ferdinand August was assigned to him by electoral act on July 23, 1777 in the office of Drosten.
