Clemens Franz de Paula, Prince of Bavaria (born April 19, 1722 in Munich ; † August 6, 1770 ibid) was the second son of the Imperial Field Marshal Ferdinand Maria Innocent of Bavaria and thus a grandson of the Bavarian Elector Maximilian II Emanuel .

Life

On January 17, 1742, in Mannheim, he married Maria Anna von Pfalz-Sulzbach , a daughter of Joseph Karl von Pfalz-Sulzbach and granddaughter of the Palatine Elector Karl III. Philip . Between 1748 and 1756 the couple had a son and three daughters, all of whom died in childhood. Surviving sons from the marriage would have in 1777 after the death of Maximilian III. Joseph inherited the Bavarian electoral dignity. Accordingly, Clemens Franz was de facto Prince Elector of Bavaria for 25 years (from 1745 to 1770) . The Bavarian scholar Andreas Felix von Oefele acted as his cabinet secretary until his death .

The Duchess Theresia Emanuela of Bavaria (1723–1743), who died early, was his only sister.

Clemens Franz was a versatile patron of the arts and sciences. In his city palace he had a small court theater and he led a court chapel. In 1741 a garden house was built, which from 1757 was expanded into a small palace complex and soon became known as the Clemensschlößl . Clemens Franz used to spend the summer months here. He also had estates in Bohemia, including imperial city . After his death the possessions went to Maximilian III. Joseph over.

His heart was buried separately and, like that of his wife, is in the Chapel of Grace in Altötting .
