Clemens Schäffer

Clemens Schäffer (born February 27, 1629 in Vienna ; † March 31, 1693 there ) was an Austrian Cistercian and 52nd abbot of Heiligenkreuz Abbey .

Life

In 1646 he entered the monastery, in 1648 his profession . He then began studying philosophy and theology at the University of Vienna . In 1654 he was ordained a priest . He held the offices of abbot secretary, subprior and prior in Heiligenkreuz. On April 11, 1658 he was elected abbot.

The abbot died on March 31, 1693 in the Heiligenkreuzerhof in Vienna, he was buried in the Heiligenkreuzer Stiftskirche. There is a large epitaph dedicated to him today .

The abbot's coat of arms represents a lamb alluding to Schäffer's family name. His motto was: act and instruct .
