Cliftonia is a plant from the family of Cyrillaceae and the only species of the genus Cliftonia .
description
Cliftonia monophylla is an evergreen small tree or shrub. The flower stalk has two bracts that are shed.
The petals have no glands. The stamens are in two leaf circles of five leaves each, the stamens are laterally widened, in the lower half corolla-like. The ovaries are three to five-sided and three to five-sided, each compartment has a hanging ovule . The nearly sessile, massive scar is two to five times lobed. The fruit is two to five times winged and contains up to five seeds, but the seeds are usually absent.

The species is found in the coastal plains of the southeastern United States.
Systematics
Together with the genus Cyrilla , which includes only one species, Cliftonia forms the family of the Cyrillaceae. Since Cliftonia is also monotypical, the family includes only two species.
