The Clube Ferroviário da Huíla ( Portuguese for "Huíla Railway Association"), usually just called Ferroviário da Huíla , is an Angolan football club from Lubango , the capital of the Huíla Province . In addition to football, the club mainly does basketball, but also volleyball and other indoor sports, and athletics.

history

The club was founded on October 15, 1950 as Clube Ferroviário de Sá da Bandeira , in what was then the Portuguese colony of Angola. The current city of Lubango then had the Portuguese place name Sá da Bandeira. The club was founded in the vicinity of the Caminho de Ferro de Moçâmedes railway line , which was expanded until 1963 and whose main through station was Sá da Bandeira.

The club's stadium, the Estádio do Ferroviário , was completed in 1970 and was officially named Estádio Sá da Bandeira . It seats 10,000 spectators.

After Angola's independence in 1975, the Ferroviário continued in the country's top division, Girabola . The following 1980s in particular saw the club's most successful period. He won the Angolan Cup in 1985 and 1989 and reached the cup final in 1987. As a result, he appeared several times in the African Cup Winners' Cup . In 1988 he failed in the second round at the Zambian club Power Dynamos , in 1990 he was eliminated in the 16th final against Desportivo Maputo from Mozambique .

He finished the Angolan season in 1990 in fourth, but then left Girabola for other reasons. In the 1999 season , the Ferroviário appeared again in the Girabola, but was then not allowed or could not participate in the game and rose from bottom of the table again. He now plays in the leagues of the Huíla Provincial Association.
