Club seal of the Science Fiction Club Germany

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Club Siegel was a late 1950s by the Science Fiction Club Germany (SFCD) lent quality that sufficient claims of SFCD and when reading for the SFCD members and the German SF fans generally recommended science fiction should be marked.

Award

On the one hand, individual volumes of the SF novel series Utopia- Großband and Utopia-Krimi were awarded - which were included in the contribution for SFCD members of contribution groups A and B and were sent - and on the other hand works from the program of the SF at that time -Library book publishers . The latter were largely divided into three categories, according to the announcement in the club magazine Andromeda :

  • SF: novels, the content of which goes beyond the comprehension of the present generation and describes the things and actions that may occur later, but which are considered impossible according to the state of today's science.
  • SPACE OPERA: Novels that use a well-known topic without claiming scientific accuracy (but if possible!) To describe space wars, interplanetary differences and other adventures in the context of a more or less exciting plot.
  • FUTURE ROMANIES: Novels that expand on a scientific topic known today and try to find out where this current science can lead to ...

The award of the seal was carried out by the literary department of the SFCD, headed by Ernst H. Richter at the time, who himself is represented several times as an author of the award-winning books under the pseudonyms William Brown and Ernest Terridge. The same applies to the then 1st chairman and managing director of the SFCD Walter Ernsting (aka Clark Darlton), the 2nd chairman Heinz Bingenheimer (aka Henry Bings) and the authors who are close to the SFCD WD Rohr and KH Scheer .

The winning works were discussed in the club news and recognized accordingly. An award at the request of a publisher seems to have been possible or at least originally intended:

“Publishers who want the novels they publish to be labeled with our club seal have the opportunity to contact us and submit the manuscripts for review. The examination is free of charge, only if the novel is suitable for bearing our seal, a small recognition fee is charged, which is disproportionate to the benefit that the publisher has by using the seal, as has been proven ... The following two sections contain the lists of loan books and utopia booklets that have been awarded the SFCD club seal by Wolfgang Thadewald .
