Coahuilteco , also Coahuilteco ( ISO 639-3 : xcw), is an indigenous American language that was common in southern Texas and northeastern Mexico . The Coahuiltec dialects are all extinct. Coahuiltec was the language of the Coahuiltec peoples.

In 1920, Edward Sapir postulated an assignment of Coahuiltek and the languages of the Tonkawa and Karankawa together with the Hoka languages to a Hoka-Coahuiltek group; according to Rudolph C. Troike, Coahuiltek is now an isolated language . The existence of ejective sounds, the sequence of parts of sentences subject-object-verb and a congruence between subject and object are passed down as characteristics of Coahuiltek .

The best information on the Coahuilteco speakers comes from Damián Mazanet and Bartholomé García , who documented the indigenous population of the region and their languages at the end of the 17th and mid-18th centuries. After the end of the 18th century there is no longer any evidence of the language. The name Coahuilteco was coined in the 19th century by the Mexican linguist Manuel Orozco y Berra .
