Harald Haarmann (born April 16, 1946 in Braunschweig ) is a German linguist and cultural scientist and author.

life and work

Harald Haarmann studied general linguistics, various individual philological disciplines and history at the universities of Hamburg , Bonn , Coimbra and Bangor . He received his doctorate in 1970 from the University of Bonn and completed his habilitation in 1979 at the University of Trier. He has taught and researched at various German and Japanese universities and is a member of the research team of the Research Center on Multilingualism ( Brussels ). Since 2003 he has been Vice President of the Institute of Archeomythology (headquarters in Sebastopol (California) , USA) and Director of its European Branch (based in Finland).

Harald Haarmann is the author of more than 40 books. He himself writes books in German and English. His books have been translated into numerous languages ​​including Spanish, Hungarian, Bulgarian, Czech, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean. He is the author of nearly 200 articles and essays in ten languages. He has published around 20 anthologies. His preferred areas of research are cultural and language contacts, the history of writing, language evolution, archeomythology, the history of religion and classical studies.

Haarmann postulates the scientifically controversial hypothesis of a Danube civilization .

For his work he received the Prix ​​logos (1999) of the Association européenne des linguistes et des professeurs de langues ( Paris ) and the Premio Jean Monnet (1999) in the field of essay literature. In 2006 he received the Plato Award .

He lives and works in Finland .
