The Coal River is a 20 km long river in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand .
geography
The headwaters of the Coal River are located around 4 km north of Mount Musgave in the Two Thumb Range . From its headwaters, the river initially flows 6.5 km in a south-westerly direction and then swings after two extensive arcs in a north-westerly direction, and then after a total of 20 km of river flow shortly before its confluence with Lake Tekapo to the west.
