The bell vines ( Cobaea scandens , occasionally incorrectly Cobea scandens ), also called bell vines or clawed bindweed, is a species of plant in the family of the barrier herbaceous plants (Polemoniaceae). She is from Mexico.
description
The bell vine is a fast-growing, herbaceous perennial climbing plant that is usually cultivated as an annual plant . Its branched stems are 3 to 8 m long. The feathery leaves are made up of two or three pairs of permanent pinna leaflets together. The egg-shaped pointed to narrow-lanceolate leaflets are 3 to 13 cm long, 1 to 6 cm wide and have a smooth edge. At the ends of the leaflets sit the branched, reddish colored tendrils, the hook shape of which probably led to the sometimes used name claw winds; they are up to 5 cm long. The stalks of the leaflets (about 1 mm) and leaflets (5 to 20 mm) are only short. The plant reacts to mechanical stimuli. After being touched, the tendrils slowly curve. It has a distinctive autumn color. Stipules are missing.
The flowering period extends from July to October, or until the first frost. The bell vine has hanging, large, blue-violet flowers that stand individually on 8 to 30 cm long stems in the leaf axils. The bell shape of the flowers gave this type of plant its name. The hermaphrodite flower is radially symmetrical and five-fold. The broad, green calyx is 3 to 3.5 cm long. The corolla is 4 to 6.5 cm long and the corolla lobes are shorter than the corolla tube. Initially yellow-green, the color of the corolla changes to purple, with a special variety also to beige-white. At the same time, the scent changes from dull-sweet to honey-like. There is only one circle with five fertile stamens ; they are about 20 mm long with anthers about 10 mm long. Three carpels have become a top permanent ovary grown. The distinctive pistils and stamens hang out from the flower. In terms of pollination biology, the bell vine belongs to the "bluebells" within the " bat flowers " ( chiropterophilia ).
The conspicuous capsule fruit is 5 to 9 cm long and contains many winged seeds.
