Coccomyxa is a genus of colony-forming green algae from the class of Chlorophyceae . They often occur as symbiotic partners in lichens .
features
The representatives form colonies of immobile cells that are enclosed in a jelly . The individual cells are elliptical and carry a wall-mounted chloroplast that does not have a pyrenoid . The surrounding jelly is irregular and shows no concentric stratification. The cells are irregularly arranged within the jelly. The cells are 2 to 20 micrometers in size.
Asexual reproduction occurs through the formation of 2 to 8 autospores within the cell wall of the mother cell. Sexual reproduction is unknown in Coccomyxa .
Occurrence
Coccomyxa occurs in the plankton of larger freshwater lakes. However, the majority of the species live on tree bark and stone surfaces. These species also enter into lichen symbioses as algae partners.
Systematics
The genus Coccomyxa includes 21 recognized species according to Algaebase.
