Botryococcus is a genus of colony-forming green algae fromthe Trebouxiophyceae class .

features

The representatives have spherical to elongated oval single cells. These are connected by a tough jelly to form large colonies. The single cells have a single nucleus and a single chloroplast . This is wall-mounted, cup-shaped and has a pyrenoid . Inside the cell there are usually yellow oil droplets that can also be released into the gelatinous tissue. If the oil droplets are present in large quantities, they increase the buoyancy of the colony in such a way that the colony rises to the surface of the water and can form dense films there.

Asexual reproduction occurs through the formation of auto spores. Colonies that are too large can simply disintegrate. Sexual reproduction is not known in Botryococcus .

Occurrence

Botryococcus occurs in plankton predominantly from nutrient-rich waters. They can also be found in ponds that sometimes dry out.

Systematics

Botryococcus has been assigned to different groups of green algae in the past. Recent studies see the genus consistently as a representative of the class Trebouxiophyceae . Algaebase put the genus as incertae sedis in this group.

The genus Botryococcus includes a few species. Algaebase names 12 recognized species.
