Cochlostoma acutum is a land-living snail species from the family of the forest cap snail (Cochlostomatidae) in the order Architaenioglossa ("old bandworm").

features

The right-hand wound case is 7.3 to 7.5 mm high and 2 to 2.8 mm wide. It is slender-tower-shaped and has 10.5 turns that increase slowly and evenly. The turns are well arched and separated from each other by a clear seam. The last handle is rounded at the base, not canted. The first 2.5 turns are smooth, the remaining whorls are regularly ribbed, the ribs are widely spaced. The ribs become finer on the last turn.

The mouth is comparatively small, almost rounded with an obtuse-angled corner on the upper parietal edge. The edge of the mouth is white and widened. Only at the edge of the spindle is the edge of the mouth drawn out into an "ear". The case is horn-colored.

Similar Art

Cochlostoma acutum was regarded as a synonym of Cochlostoma simrothi until 2002 . At a locality between the Vallon de la Bendola and the Vallon de la Madonina (Dépt. Alpes-Maritimes), the two species were found sympatric living, and thus the independence of Cochlostoma acutum was proven. The housing of Cochlostoma acutum is significantly slimmer with more arched passages. The ribs are clearer and a little closer. The edge of the mouth is significantly narrower at the lower edge and towards the spindle ear. While Cochlostoma simrothi lives exclusively on limestone rocks, Cochlostoma acutum also occurs on dead wood in the forest.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species is endemic to a very small area in the French department of Alpes-Maritimes . So far, only the following occurrences are known: Roya Valley between La Giandola , Fontan and a locality between the Vallon de la Bendola and the Vallon de la Madonina (Alpes-Maritimes department, France)

The animals live on limestone cliffs, but also on dead wood in the forest. A forest of European hop beech ( Ostrya carpinifolia ) grew at the location in the Vallon de la Bendola at 470 to 490 m above sea level .

Taxonomy

The taxon was first introduced into scientific literature in 1908 by Eugène Caziot as Pomatis acutum (spelling mistake for Pomatias acutum ). But he attributed the species to Carlo Pollonera . Apparently, he had labeled collection labels in the museum in Turin . No sole authorship or even participation by Carlo Pollonera in the first description can be recognized. The species must be attributed to Eugène Caziot.

Louis Germain named the taxon in 1931 as Cochlostoma (Anotus) acutum Pollonera. Olivier Gargominy and Theo Ripken then named it Cochlostoma (Turritus) acutum (Caziot, 1908). The fauna Europaea followed this assignment.

Danger

Due to the extremely small distribution area, the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) assesses the species as endangered. The species is not protected by law in France, but the range is within the Mercantour National Park .
