Cochlostoma simrothi is a land-living snail species from the family of the forest cap snail (Cochlostomatidae) in the order Architaenioglossa ("Alt-Bandzüngler").

features

The right-hand winding, elongated tower-shaped case is 7 to 9 mm high and 2.5 to 3.8 mm wide. It has 8 to 9 well arched turns, bounded by a deep seam. The last turn is rounded at the base and rises just before the mouth. The sculpture consists of dense and regular, fine ribs. The ribs are finer on the last turns.

The rounded mouth is greatly expanded and bent. The wide edge of the mouth is whitish and sometimes doubled. The spindle edge is drawn out to one ear, which does not rest on the penultimate handle. The front edge, on the other hand, is only indistinctly "eyed". There is no navel, and the outer and inner margins are connected by a parietal callus . The case is brownish horn-colored.

Similar Art

Cochlostoma acutum (Caziot, 1908) isvery similar to Cochlostoma simrothi and has often beentreatedas a synonym . However, the former differs in its slimmer housing. The ribs are more pronounced and are a little closer together. The edge of the mouth is much narrower at the lower edge and towards the spindle ear. While Cochlostoma simrothi lives exclusively on limestone rocks, Cochlostoma acutum also occurs on dead wood in the forest.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The distribution area lies in the border area of south-east France ( Vallon de Caïros 5 km west of Saorge , Vallon de la Bendola east of Saorge, Mont Peyrevieille east of Saorge, Breil-sur-Roya , all localities in the Alpes-Maritimes department ) and north-west Italy (Alta Val Nervia , Imperia Province ).

The animals live exclusively on limestone cliffs at 350 m to 1850 m above sea level.

Taxonomy

The taxon was first described in 1908 in the work of Eugène Caziot . Caziot attributed the new species to Carlo Pollonera . Unfortunately, it is not clear from the text whether Pollonera actually made a contribution to the description or whether it was just a manuscript name or collection name of Pollonera that was adopted by Caziot.

The taxon was only treated as a subspecies of Cochlostoma patulum by some authors . The fauna Europaea has Cochlostoma (Turritus) simrothi as an independent species. Cochlostoma acutum (Caziot, 1908), also from a very small area in the Alpes-Maritimes, was also taken as a synonym for C. patulum , later by C. simrothi . The discovery of sympatric specimens of both taxa has also proven the independence of Cochlostoma acutum .

Danger

The species is not considered endangered despite its small distribution area.
