Cochlostoma auritum , also eared tower snail, is a land-living snail from the family of forest snails (Cochlostomatidae) in the order Architaenioglossa ("old bandworm").

features

The right-hand winding, relatively large case is 9 to 13 mm (12 to 15 mm) high and 4.5 to 6 mm wide. Ice is conical to elongated conical and has 8 to 9 (9 to 10.5) well arched turns, separated by a deep seam. The turns increase slowly at first, then a little faster from the fifth and sixth turn. The last turn is noticeably widened, rounded, but rises only a little. The base is comparatively wide, the side line is slightly concave. The apex is thin and occasionally truncated. The surface has widely spaced, somewhat irregular, sharp ribs; Fine rib-like stripes are formed in the interstices. Ribs and rib strips are slightly oblique to the axis of the coil, are slightly curved and slightly lighter in color. ribs and rib strips alternate on the first turns; There are 1 to 6 rib strips in the spaces between each rib. On the penultimate turn the ribs weaken, stand further apart and disappear completely on the last turn in favor of the rib strips. The individuals are, however, quite variable in the detailed design of the ornamentation. The navel is open.

The mouth is pear-shaped to ovoid and comparatively large. The base does not recede backwards, but only very slightly. The palate (palatal region) is strikingly white in color. The mouth edge is simple, but can also be thickened or doubled by a white overlay. The inner seam is thin, not turned up much and connected by a callus. The outer hem is turned up wide, thin, tapered sharply and appears fragile. He is clearly "heard".

The housing is monochrome horn brown to horn gray, matt and translucent. The shell is comparatively thin and fragile. The operculum is thick and calcified. It consists of two layers separated by air chambers and has four passages.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The range of the species extends from the southern Dalmatian coastal mountains (Croatia) to northern Albania. The animals live there on limestone cliffs.

Taxonomy

The taxon was set up in 1837 by Emil Adolf Roßmaessler as Cyclostoma auritum . Anton Josef Wagner set up the new Sectio Titanopoma for this species . Wilhelm Kobelt first added the species (including the Sectio Titanopoma ) to the genus Cochlostoma Jan, 1830.

The Fauna Europaea has the following synonyms:

  • Pomatias callistoma Letourneux 1885
  • Pomatias chelys Westerlund 1883
  • Pomatias panleius Letourneux 1885
  • Pomatias regularis Letourneux 1885
  • Pomatias tchernagoricus Letourneux, 1885

Cochlostoma (Auritus) auritum (Roßäßler, 1837) is currently divided into six subspecies:

  • Cochlostoma (Auritus) auritum auritum (Roßäßler, 1837)
  • Cochlostoma (Auritus) auritum drimmeri Varga, 1998
  • Cochlostoma (Auritus) auritum gjonii Feher, 2004
  • Cochlostoma auritum lamellatum (Westerlund, 1885)
  • Cochlostoma (Auritus) auritum meridionalis (O. Boettger 1886)
  • Cochlostoma (Auritus) auritum montenegrinum (AJ Wagner 1897)

The taxon Pomatias auritus Roßmaessler, 1837 is the type species of the subgenus Cochlostoma (Auritus) Westerlund, 1883 and the subgenus Cochlostoma (Titanopoma) Wagner, 1897. The latter subgenus is thus a younger, objective synonym of Cochlostoma (Auritus) Westerlund, 1883 .
